About Clare Goddard
Clare Goddard is an Arts Professional with over twenty years of diverse experience. She trained as a Theatre Director at Drama Studio London (DSL) where she graduated with Distinction and was awarded the 'Director of the Year' Award. Prior to this, from 1991 - 94 Clare co-founded Mali & Nebezpecni (Small and Dangerous) Theatre Company based in Prague, Czech Republic. She also taught at the Central European University, Prague. During this time, Clare also worked as a language teacher for the National Theatre Institute and the State Opera House as well as directing for other theatrical organisations and companies.
After graduating from DSL, Clare worked as a Freelance Practitioner for The Gate Theatre, The Actors Centre and Soho Theatre Company. From 1996 - 1999 Clare was an Associate Director of Orit Azaz’s company The Common Sense - whose work included site-specific collaborations in which teams of artists devised, designed and created theatre events in response to a community or business context. Orit's work inspired much of Clare's later theatrical practice.
In 1999, Clare was appointed Artistic Director of the Maddermarket Theatre in Norwich. The Maddermarket is a professionally led regional producing and receiving venue. As well as directing, Clare's responsibilities included the formation of collaborative partnerships, devising and education and outreach work. During her 5 years as Artistic Director, Clare directed 27 productions and co-produced a further 40 for the Maddermarket Theatre. She also created the '3 Cities Festival' - an international collaboration between the Maddermarket and theatre companies in Cork, Ireland and Haarlem, Holland. Clare also devised and directed a weekend 'Murder Mystery' for De Vere Dunstan Hall Hotel, Norfolk. Clare has great affection for the Maddermarket Theatre and its community ethos.
In 2004 Clare became Head of Professional Development and a Senior Project Manager for Arts & Business (A&B), based in London. A&B is a nationwide organisation and is one of The Prince's Charities. Clare's role involved overseeing the delivery and strategic development of volunteering programmes for business and the arts - specialising in Governance, Mentoring and Diversity. During this time, Clare was also responsible for the development of the Mentoring Programme of City University's MA in Cultural Leadership.
In 2007 Clare founded Three Rivers Productions (3RP), now based in Norwich. Three Rivers Productions is an arts organisation that specialises in innovative theatrical productions as well as providing bespoke cultural activities and events. The Company is particularly interested in work that involves participation with other organisations and sectors - believing that it is through the 'meeting of minds' that the best work happens!
Clare is also an Independent Consultant and Freelance Director with clients in Norfolk, London and beyond. This summer she is a Guest Director for Sheringham Little Theatre, Norfolk. She is also a Visiting Lecturer at City University, London and Norwich University College of the Arts. Clare studied as an undergraduate at the University of York and King's College, London where she graduated with an MA with Distinction in English & American Literature.
